Transformers IDW 2019 Continuity – a retrospective

The first Transformers continuity created by IDW comics is regarded by many as the best Transformer comics that have ever been made.  Kicking off in 2005, it ran for an impressive 13 years with hundreds of issues and took the G1’esque universe to places it had never been before, culminating in a climatic battle against Unicron himself.

In 2019 IDW rebooted the Transformers comic universe and it was….. not well received.  Many fans had become very attached to the universe of old, especially the adventures of the Lost Light which introduced genuine comedy into the franchise, something it was sorely lacking.   One could argue that the first continuity had done so much there was nothing left to do so a reboot was required, but many fans still mourned it’s loss.

Sniff… you were taken from us too soon.

But can the fact that the 2019 reboot was not well loved be solely attributed to the affection fans felt for the old universe?  Personally I didn’t know as at that stage I had ‘comic fatigue’ and was not up to investing myself into a new series, especially after I read the first few issues.  The new series only lasted 3 years, as opposed to the 13 of its predecessor, and perhaps was a hundred issues give or take all together.

‘A Bold New World’ turned out to be ‘A Bored New World’

Over the past 3 weeks I have binge-read the entirety of the IDW 2019 Transformers continuity. Below are my thoughts on what was good, what was bad, and why ultimately it failed.

 

The Bad

First and foremost – it started too slooooow.

It’s just more of this for like 10 issues.

There is some good action to be found in the 2019 universe, but it takes so many issues to get to it.  The majority of the first dozen issues are characters walking down hallways talking to one another.  And the banter is boring.  Yes, they were trying to establish that this was a pre-great war Cybertron, and show Orion Pax and Megatron travelling inevitably towards their fates, but Transformers fans don’t primarily read comics for the political discourse – they want to see giant, shape-changing alien robots fighting each other!  There was so much blah-blah-blah that when they finally got to the good stuff a lot of fans had tuned out and were no longer interested.

Let us stand in completely neutral poses and talk a lot – the audience will love that.

 

The characters lack character

This is the exciting Sixshoot from the 2005 continuity…

Lets use Sixshot as a comparison.  When introduced into the 2005 continuity it showed him destroying a whole civilisation single handed!  And he showed all 6 of his modes in his very first issue! He has a rich backstory of being a one-percenter that gets augmented to become a phase-sixer and after arriving on Earth, it took the combined firepower of Optimus and a whole squad of Autobots to even slow him down. In the 2019 continuity, even after 3 years he still hasn’t used all of his modes, he spends more time talking that fighting, and the first battle between him and Windblade is frighteningly dull.  That’s right, they managed to make a fight that involved Sixshot boring.

Sixshot is just one example.  Megatron never does much except plot and has a total of one brief punch up with Optimus over the entire 3 years – he doesn’t even rant that well.  Swindle is always grumpy and talking about percentages rather than being the cheery swindler we all love.  The banter between Strongarm and Sideswipe is supposed to evoke their love-hate relationship from the RID2015 continuity but falls flat.  None of the characters really evolve or change or grow and their personalities are the same from the first issue they show up in to the last.  Very few characters ever display any real passion or panic about anything.  I’ll have to note there are a few exceptions such as Flamewar, who is at least goofy enough to be mildly entertaining, as is Skywarp.

 

Cybertron is artistically dull

Cybertron is a robot alien world, full of wonders and marvels, created from the body of Primus himself.  So why does it seem to consist of nothing but corridors and barren  landscapes?  The background always seems to be mutely coloured in shades of tan and bronze, the buildings are very basic rectangles and nothing pops.  There are no interesting details to note, there is not a lot of anything really.  Even when huge events happen like an orbital tether collapsing so that a giant cable cuts a swath of destruction across all of Iacon, its unimpressive.  As is when the Titan’s fall from the sky.  It’s Titan’s falling out of the sky and crashing into Cybertron, and it still looks boring, just rectangular brick looking things hitting empty ground.  Given the rather less than awed response from the observing bots, they were not impressed either.

 

The robots also look dull

Bumblebee: ‘And I’m one of the most artistically detailed characters in the series!’

The artist Angel Hernandez was obviously not a fan of strong colours as even the bots look washed out.  There is the occasional pop of colour such as at Swindle’s casino, but not much.  The bots are often as blocky as the landscape, with detail only ever given to some of the more major characters such as Bumblebee’s face or Orion’s body.  Not a lot of size difference either, everyone is roughly similar heights and shapes, even the Micromasters, with just the odd detail like wings and faces to differentiate them.  If you don’t know the characters already, you are hard pressed to tell with many who is male and who is female.  Yes, I know that we are all supposed to be ‘blind to gender’ now, but would it really be insulting to let the female characters look female?  I had to look up if the character Glyph was male or female as I couldn’t tell from the art, and the likes of Road Rage are only able to be identified as female when you see they have slightly fuller lips. With blocky bodies and little to set them apart from muted colour schemes and a bit of altmode kibble, the alien mechanoid populace of Cybertron have rarely looked so boring.  The Wreckers mini-series set on Velocitron is worthy of mention for being the exception to this.

If only the rest of the series could have popped like this.

 

Barely a Transformation

To be fair this is an issue I had with the 2005 continuity as well.  Transformers are supposed to, well, transform.  But they hardly ever do it!  The Seekers showcase the ability the most in order to go into battle, but most other characters, even major ones, either hardly ever transform or never transform at all!. And even when they do, most of the time its just to get from point A to point B, they don’t really use their altmodes for anything but transport.  Way to remove a quintessential concept from a franchise.  One must wonder if perhaps this is done on purpose as despite Earth never being visited, there are plenty of characters with Earth vehicle modes occasionally on show  (based on the then current Siege toyline) – the artists obviously not bothering to come up with Cybertronian modes for them – so the less the audience saw of the altmodes the less they would say ‘Hang on a sec…’

The Good

(yes there is some!)

As mentioned, the 2019 continuity eventually does come into its own.  Whilst many of the negatives above such as bland landscapes and characters that rarely show strong emotions persist, the storyline starts to move faster, disparate story arcs begin to overlap and intertwine, and we even get a few interesting battles.  These are not the only positives:

 

Overlooked characters getting their shot.

Howlback, Squalktalk and Beastbox joining their more popular compatriots. A shame Howlback looks like a rat though.

The Lost Light comic series set a great precedent, elevating minor characters to places of prominence, and giving characters who have barely appeared over the last 30 years a chance to briefly shine.  The 2019 continuity may not do it as well, but it does do it. Chainclaw works security, Howlback works infiltration, Hydrahead and Rage use their liquid weapons to try and assassinate the Insecticons, Redwing leads Seeker attacks.   It’s always interesting to see someone different from the main cast get their turn upon the page.

Transformers have ‘Stormtroopers’ too, wonder if their aim is as bad.

 

Action Masters are cool!

If you didn’t own the toy from G1 I bet you want him now!

It’s nice to see the Action Masters done right!  At the time the most reviled of the G1 toys – Transformers who couldn’t transform – Action Masters now experience the same love of much of the old toyline simply due to being G1.  In this series they haven’t been retroactively been given altmodes like in others, they are all mode locked and yes, like the original storyline from the G1 toys its due to overuse of Nucleon.  The best part is that many seem to come with their accessories: the likes of Axer and Circuit drive their vehicles, whilst characters like Treadshot and Charger have their animal sidekicks.  And Charger with Fire Beast – talk about including obscure characters!

Interesting-ish Subplots

Oh, if only the characters were given some more, er, character and the graphics a bit of oomph, these could have been great.  We see interesting subplots explore the origins of the Constructicons and the Insecticons, how they came to be and where they are going.  The Constructicons are, not officially, banished from Cybertron because the populace fears the power of Devastator, and the Insecticons go from walking garbage disposals to cannibals who feast on organics and fellow bots alike.  Both these early story lines have a profound affect at the series conclusion, particularly the Insecticons.

‘Look, we are actually doing computer stuff, not just shooting Autobots’

With so many characters, Transformers comic writers often ignore what they are supposed to do and simply make them one of a multitude of soldiers, especially on the Decepticon side.  Not so with this continuity.  Sparkstalker for the first time in his existence is actually functioning as a hacker instead of simply breathing fire.  Bumblebee is working espionage instead of smiling and being the Transformers poster boy.  For a Transformers geek like me, this was a level of detail greatly appreciated.

 

No Earth, No Humans!

Well, nearly.  The only Humans that appear are in the King Grimlock miniseries, a shoutout to the G1 episode Madman’s Paradise.  Even then it’s not on Earth so they get a pass.

 

Too little, too late

So yes, there were positives to be found in the IDW 2019 Transformers Continuity.  Unfortunately for them, the first year was so lackluster that most fans (myself included) had tuned out and were no longer buying by the time it started to get halfway decent.  Having binged the entire continuity over the last 3 weeks I can say it turned out not as bad as I thought, but it’s nothing I will revisit and am glad I saved my pennies by reading them online rather than purchasing the comics themselves.  How did IDW go from making the best Transformers comics ever to the worst?  Was it a case of the new writers and artists making bad decisions, them not caring, or did perhaps IDW feel it was done with the franchise and therefore organised a lackluster effort to get them out of their contract with Hasbro?  Who knows.  But like the cartoon series –Transformers Robots in Disguise 2015 – it seems destined to forever be referred to by fans in the tone of ‘meh, bits were ok, but it was never really that great’.

 

Transformers Collection – Universe

And thus the great cataloging of my collection continues.

Transformers Universe was… it was…. it was a bloody mess to be honest!

Starting out in 2003, it was intially a way to milk existing moulds.  It took figures from G2, Beast Wars, Beast Machines and the Unicron Trilogy and released them as their original characters with new colour schemes, or else repainted them into different characters completely.

Then it moved on to new characters and toys, such as making Micromaster combiners out of classic teams, and  limped along for several years, releasing a smattering of figures here and there, even pulling other toys under its umberella that really should be classified under different toylines such as figures from G1, Titanium, Robot Heroes and even Masterpiece.

Then in 2008 they revamped the line, with many new toys of existing G1 characters, picking up where the Classics line left off, making it quite popular until the line came to an end in 2010.  Some of the figures were also released under the Takara banner Henkei! Henkei!

Toys and characters from almost every continuity, Micromasters, Targetmasters, Combiners, Autobots, Decepticons, Predacons, Maximals, Mini-Cons, Spychangers, repaints, retools – the line had everything while at the same time specializing in nothing, and making it damn hard to keep track of for collectors.

Transformers Collection – TCG Cards

A few years ago Wizards of the Coast, in conjunction with Hasbro, released the Transformers Trading Card Game.

Though the game has come to a close now, it was very popular for quite a while, and WOTC/Hasbro were even kind enough to send me a few different sets to review when the game was at its height.  Even if you no longer play the game, the artwork on the cards makes them well worth keeping.

Toy Review – Studio Series Scrapper

The slow release of the Studio Series Constructicons continues.  Some see it as a good thing, not overloading their budgets.  Others see it as an irritation, their frustration to build Devastator from Revenge of the Fallen growing week by week.

For me personally it has been neither.  As someone who is happy enough with the ROFT Devastator I already own, this Studio Series has simply been a chance to fill out my collection with those onscreen Cons who never received an actually decent toy before such as Scrapmetal.

Today we are looking at one such character.  The leader of the Constructicons in G1, who like Long Haul and Mixmaster got to actually keep their proper name and traditional alt-mode for the movieverse, we are looking at Scrapper.

 

Robot Mode

This looks pretty good for a movieverse toy.  He actually looks like a robot rather than just a mess and is pretty faithful to how he appeared on the big screen.  He has retained the flail attachment on his arm, however sadly is unable to swing it.  He has decent articulation for a fairly stocky bot, with elbows, neck, knees and hip movement.

The colour scheme is not only faithful to how he appeared in ROTF, but also has some G1 roots too, almost an homage to the European/Australasian rerelease of the G1 Constucticons from 1992.

Vehicle Mode

Really pretty damn good!  A superb amount of detail throughout the entire vehicle form, this looks like a proper model of a real construction vehicle.  Some have argued that the alt-mode is too kibble-laden, but as someone who has seen a lot of very large construction vehicles up close, some Front Shovel Loaders do indeed look similar with parts everywhere.

The vehicle form feels very solid overall and a nice touch is that you can actually raise the shovel!

Transformation

This figure has a really interesting transformation.  With 36 steps its going to take you a few minutes to do the first time out, but there is no part that is overly frustrating or a head-scratcher.  It feels very satisfying to work through, and that is always a massive plus when dealing with actual transformer toys.

 

Overall

If you have no interest in the Movieverse (in which case why are you reading this review? Go outside and play!) then it’s an easy pass.  But if you like the Movieverse, are a Constructicon fan or a completionist then you will want to pick this guy up.  Of course if you intend to build Devastator then you have no choice but to pick him up!  But you wont regret doing so, it’s a solid figure in both modes with a good transformation and for once you feel like you are getting a proper Voyager-class sized figure when buying a toy of that classification.  So yeah, a good value toy that reminds you just how fun transforming transformers can be.

Devastator Pack Review: Part 2 – Gameplay. Transformers TCG

Last week we got to have a sneak peek at the Devastator Deck, courtesy of an advance copy from Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, and look at the cards contained within in detail.

Now officially released, these are available for purchase, and over the past week I’ve gotten a chance to really put the pack through its paces.  So let’s have a look at the Devastator Pack in gameplay.

And the usual spiel: Neither Hasbro or Wizards of the Coast have paid for this review nor have they tried to dictate the contents of this blog.  Bigangrytrev.com would like to thank both companies for their ongoing generosity.

Since all the cards have been already examined in great detail in Part 1 of the review, we wont rehash what we already know.  If you need a reminder, go check out that post.  Instead I’m going to give you some top tips for using Devastator to… er… devastate! In particular we will look at pitting the Constructicons against other Combiner Teams, such as the Stunticons and  Menasor.

 

GAMEPLAY TIPS & TRICKS

Get Scrapper into Robot Mode

This should be your very first action!  Not only does it get one of the 6 characters into robot mode which you will need to make Devastator later, but it means every time another Constructicon gets KO’ed you will get a point for your Tower Card.

Get Bonecrusher in the mix

As your best offensive Constructicon, get him into Robot Mode next.  You want to try and inflict a fair bit of damage with him and his Pierce 2 on your opponents cards before he gets KO’ed due to his low Health Stats.

Flip Scavenger next

You want that Bold 1 and the extra card it garners you every time you are attacked.

Keep the others in vehicle mode until KO’ed or needed

The other 3 Constructicons don’t have particularly useful Robot Mode abilities so I suggest keeping them in Vehicle Form until KO’ed.  Their stats remain exactly the same and every time you attack with them it will give you another point for your tower.

If any character gets KO’ed in vehicle mode, flip them at the first opportunity. 

Their ability to get you extra points for your Tower is gone once they are KO’ed, so if you come across a card like Rapid Conversion, use it to flip a KO’ed vehicle into Robot Mode so they are ready to combine when required.

Build that Tower to at least 6 before combining!

I played several games both as and against Devastator and I’ll tell ya, you will really want those extra 2 Bold points Devastator gets when his Tower is at 6. They do make a difference when trying to knock out another Combiner like Menasor or a Titan like Metroplex, characters that have huge stats.  Also it means that it’s 6 damage points that you get to remove from Devastator, which also makes a huge difference!

Getting your Tower to 10 before combing is often unrealistic.

While it would be great to have your Tower at 10 before you form Devastator, unless you have a good run of luck with the cards it is probably not going to happen.  If you can achieve it, great!  It means you loose 10 whole damage counters and get extra attack power right off the bat, but again, it’s likely not to happen.  Hope to get your tower to 8 and then pick up some Builders Tools and Enigma cards to take you the rest of the way.

If your opponent makes a Combiner first, get combining!

Gotta Combin’em all!

The likes of Menasor are pretty damn powerful and you don’t want to give them free reign for too long, because your individual Constructicons aren’t going to be very effective against the behemoth.

Keep track of your Builders Tools and Constructicon Enigma Cards

These two cards are the only way to add extra points to your Tower after you build Devastator.  You get three of each card so keep track of where they are and how many you have used.  Once or twice I had to form Devastator when only having 4 points on my Tower, and coming across those cards enabled me to bring my Tower up to 6, helping turn the tide of battle.

If you get your Tower to 10 – get ready to bask in victory!

If you can get that Tower up to 10, getting an extra 4 Attack Points and your overall attack rating going up to 10 means that you are going to decimate your opponent!  As someone who has played both sides when this has happened, I can attest that the opposing Combiner/Titan/Team goes down very quickly under an onslaught that strong.

 

So there ya go, some top tips & tricks to playing as and winning with the Constructicons and Devastator.  A lot of it will depend on the deck your opponent has built.  Given that the other Combiners special cards are only found in Booster Packs, it’s unlikely they  will have 3 of each like you will be sporting, so if you find yourself destroying every opponent in sight you might even be magnanimous and take a couple of yours out to make things more even.  Until you reach that winning streak though, devastate away!

With the Rise of the Combiner Booster Packs hitting shelves all over the country, it is nearly time for the first dedicated ROTC Box Pack to hit the shelves.  Due for release on March 29, this pack will have arguably the most popular and recognizable of all the Transformer Combiners – Devastator!  And once again bigangrytrev.com had been lucky enough to be given a pack in advance so as to bring you all the goss regarding these new cards.

Despite the average rate of finding a Combiner Character card to be 1 in 2, a lot of people have been struggling to make their first combiner, even when purchasing a whole box of the Booster Packs.  Personally I was able to make Menasor and Dreadwing right off the bat but many others have not been so fortunate.  So with the release of the Devastator Pack, it is going to bring a lot of joy to those yet to make one of these colossal characters!  In the Devastator Pack you will find not only all the cards to go with it, but all the characters you will need.  So no endless searching – all your Constructicons can be found in the same place – right here!  Lets take a look at them:

So we are noticing a few things straight off the bat.  Firstly Scrapper as the leader has 5 stars but the rest only have four.  Whilst this makes them fairly weak characters, it does mean you get to have all 6 Constructicons on the board at once.  Also you will only have one ranged character, Hook, whilst the rest are melee.  All characters have the same amount of damage, health and shield points in both their modes, making no difference in stats whether you be rocking a robot or construction vehicle.

Now to their special abilities.  Again, nothing staggering either offensively or defensively.  Bonecrusher has the best offense capability with Pierce 2 in his Robot Mode, with Hook sporting Pierce 1 and Long Haul Bold 1.  The only character to be sporting anything defensively is Scavenger with Tough 1 in his robot mode.   So what are nearly all the other special ablitities geared towards?  Towards your Tower Card, which is going to be crucial when playing as Devastator.

 

The Tower Card

This seemingly innocent little card is going to dictate so much of your gameplay when playing with the Devastator Deck.  It has made me extra glad that this is the first Transformers TCG pack that has come with instructions included.  Unique among the Combiner Characters, Devastator’s abilities are tied directly to the height of his tower.  And your individual Constructicon’s abilities are aimed towards building that tower as much as possible before combining.  As well as powering up Devestator, the height of your Tower will also affect the strength of some other cards which we shall look at a bit later.

Scrapper’s abilities are both directly tied to the Tower.  His alt-mode means you put your tower into the KO area at the start of the game (which you get to do anyway) and having him in robot mode means that every time a Constructicon gets KO’ed, you get to add another height counter to the tower.

All 5 other Constructicons have the same ability for their Alt-Mode

So this makes your individual Constructicons geared primarily towards construction, making that tower as big as possible!  Of course there are other cards to assist them offensively and defensively, several of them exclusive to the Devestator Pack, and some of these too are geared towards your tower.

 

Exclusive Cards

Note: The pack contains 3 of each card.

Builders Tools

Can be used by Constructicons only.  Gives you an extra counter on your Tower whenever a character sporting the card attacks.  This makes this card very good to put on Bonecrusher in particular, as well as being one of only two cards that you can use to build your Tower further after combining.

Reclaim

Lets you access the scrap pile for upgrades, but if your Tower is 3 or higher then you get an extra card as well.

Heavy Landing

Gives you an extra point of damage to deal, but if your Tower is 6 or higher then you do 3 damage instead.

Work Overtime

The only exclusive card that does not involve the Tower, it allows you to draw extra cards until you have four in your hand.  This makes this card very useful for most any deck you construct!

Constructicon Enigma

Like the Enigma cards for the other Combiners, you need this card to form Devestator and all your Consturcticons need to be in Bot Mode.  Unlike the other Enigma cards however,  this card does not immediately become redundant after combining.  If played when you already have Devestator on the battlefield, you get to Repair 1 damage to him, as well as putting a height counter on your Tower.

 

Devastator

Towering Warrior, Melee

25 Stars

Here he is, the big guy!  No searching through endless booster packs, you get him in one shot!  His stats are similar to the likes of Metroplex and Menasor.

As you can see, his special abilities are directly related to his tower:

* When you first combine him you get to remove an amount of damage from him equal to the height of your tower.  This means that you can allow your individual Constructicons to get pummelled to a certain extent, because as long as you keep that tower going higher and higher, by the time you form Devastator a lot of that damage will disappear!

* If your tower is 6 or higher you get Bold 2

* If your Tower is 10 or higher, your attack rating goes up from 6 to a whopping 10!

It is for the above abilities I highly recommend you do not combine Devestator until you have a minimum of 6 height on your Tower, because once Devestator is formed you cant make it any higher, unless employing another enigma card.

 

Other Cards

This pack comes with 9 other types of card, both common & uncommon and ones we have already seen before.  The one of most use to you will definitely be Rapid Conversion, since you have 6 separate characters you need to get into bot mode.  I find it funny we got Scrapper Gauntlets, since it doesn’t seem to be Scrapper sporting them.  You get two to three of each of these 9 cards.

 

So is the Devestator Pack worth getting?

Yes, oh my yes!  Not only do you get to make a Combiner Character in one go without having to search through endless Booster Packs, but it comes with a ton of exclusive cards that you cannot purchase anywhere else.  Add to that the unique playstyle the Tower brings to the game and this really is a purchase that I can’t see any big Transformers TCG players bypassing.  I highly recommend going out and picking yourself up a pack when they come out at the end of this month!
